The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Clinton Harold Anderson, Jr. (MCSN: 0-100013), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Leader with Company K, Third Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in the Republic of Vietnam, on 20 May 1967. Company K was conducting operations near Hill 70 in the vicinity of Cam Lo in Quang Tri Province when it was ambushed by a superior force of the North Vietnamese Army, and Second Lieutenant Anderson’s platoon was cut off from the rest of the company. Realizing that the enemy was attempting to separate the beleaguered company into small segments which could be easily destroyed, he reacted quickly and boldly led his platoon in a hard-pressed battle against the enemy’s flank until he was able to establish contact with the Company Command Group, and complete the vital hook-up. While doing so, Second Lieutenant Anderson’s platoon brought all their dead and wounded with them. Having closed the gap between his platoon and the Command Group, he immediately reorganized his platoon and established defensive positions. Through the night, the enemy made repeated assaults against the badly outnumbered Marines. As the battle raged, Second Lieutenant Anderson continuously checked the lines, encouraging his men and providing additional fire support where needed. He maintained close observation on the wounded, assuring every attention for them that could be afforded. His actions contributed materially toward the survival of the badly embattled company against the repeated attacks and later to the destruction of the enemy on the objective. Through his valiant and aggressive leadership and his loyal devotion to duty, Second Lieutenant Anderson contributed directly to the defeat of a vastly superior enemy force and thereby upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
