The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) John M. Cook (ASN: 0-1294090), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 2d Battalion, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Luxembourg, on 19 January 1945. The skillful, courageous leadership Captain Cook displayed while commanding his company in action against the enemy-held town of Bilsdorf, Luxembourg, distinguishes him as an outstanding officer. He was constantly in the lead, inspiring his men by his bold, fearless leadership. He personally led a daring patrol to recapture prisoners the Germans held, then led his company into the town manning a machine-gun himself. The fearless determination Captain Cook displayed and his courageous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 26th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
