The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Marvin Tunniclif (ASN: 6959952), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 11 January 1945. When an enemy attack forced friendly troops to withdraw, Private First Class Tunniclif remained to inflict devastating fire on the approaching forces. Although painfully wounded, he gallantly continued to repulse repeated attempts to overrun his position, killing thirty and wounding fifty of the enemy. Wounded again, he still attempted to fire but collapsed over his weapon from loss of blood. His magnificent courage was solely responsible for containing the hostile assault until defenses were reorganized. Private First Class Tunniclif’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
