The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Leo George Samborowski (ASN: 33463330), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as an automatic rifleman in Company F, 5th Ranger Battalion, Provisional Ranger Group (Separate), in action against enemy forces on 3 December 1944, in Lauterbach, Germany. Private First Class Samborowski fearlessly assaulted an enemy machine-gun directing withering fire against the attacking troops and silenced it by fire from his automatic rifle. As the attacking units advanced, Private Samborowski remained in his exposed position making maximum use of his weapon until he was killed by enemy machine-gun fire. His courage and supreme devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
