Headquarters, THIRD U.S. Army, General Orders No. 156 (June 30, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Technical Sergeant] Albert I. Orr, Jr. (ASN: 0-2015635), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 302d Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 5 March 1945. During an attack on strongly-defended enemy positions near Lampaden, Germany, on 5 March 1945, Lieutenant Orr assumed command of his platoon when the platoon leader became a casualty, courageously regrouped the men under heavy enemy artillery, mortar and small arms fire and led them forward, killing or capturing fifty German soldiers and attaining the platoon objective. Inspiring his men by his personal example of heroic leadership he directed the defense of their position for three days and nights in the face of devastating hostile fire and succeeded in repulsing two determined enemy counterattacks. Lieutenant Orr’s indomitable fighting spirit and unflinching devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military service.
