Headquarters, NINTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 78 (December 24, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technician Fifth Grade Clyde Edward Justice (ASN: 35768951), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Medical Aidman with an Infantry Platoon of the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces when his platoon was occupying a defensive position in Germany, on 6 October 1944. When a rifleman, who was protecting a machine gun position, was hit by enemy sniper fire, the platoon sergeant moved to the rifleman’s slit trench to aid the wounded man. As he reached the wounded soldier, he too, was wounded. Technical Sergeant Justice, knowing the danger of the situation, courageously crawled thirty yards, completely exposed to enemy snipers, and reached the slit trench now occupied by the two wounded men. Because there was no room in the slit trench, Technical Sergeant Justice lay beside the parapet for thirty-five minutes under deadly enemy fire to assist his wounded comrades. The platoon sergeant died while aid was being administered. Technical Sergeant Justice turned all his attention to the wounded rifleman. After doing everything possible for the wounded soldier, Technical Sergeant Justice returned to his own sheltered position. The extraordinary heroism and courageous action of Technical Sergeant Justice exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 30th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
