The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Seymour I. Johnson (ASN: 37098247), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, ** Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at ****, Tunisia, on 29 March 1943. On that date, intense mortar and machine gun fire had driven a 37-mm. Anti-Tank Gun crew to cover. Private Johnson, a gunner, determined the position of the enemy machine gun and informed his sergeant he was going to reduce the machine gun position with canister. Working his way through mortar and machine gun fire he reached his gun position and unassisted, loaded and brought the gun to bear on the enemy machine gun. At this point, he was shot and killed by an enemy sniper. Private Johnson’s supreme courage and devotion to duty was an inspiration to the men and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States, reflecting great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
