The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Warner Stanley Deyoe (ASN: 42113375), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 309th Infantry Regiment, 78th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 13 March 1945, in Germany. When his company was halted by intense fire from a hostile tank, Private First Class Deyoe voluntarily left his position of comparative safety and crawled across 150 yards of open, fire-swept terrain. Reaching a point 100 yards from the tank, he opened fire with his rocket launcher, disabling the vehicle. Swinging its guns around, the tank concentrated its entire fire power upon him. Although painfully wounded, Private First Class Deyoe continued to fire until the tank was destroyed. Later, he single-handedly stormed a German machine gun nest, killing the occupants and removing the last obstacle in the company’s advance. Private First Class Deyoe’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 78th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
