The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Stanley Archie Davis (ASN: 33297190), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 328th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 26 November 1944. On that date, Sergeant Davis led his squad of Company C in a determined attack against the enemy near Nonskirch, France, and succeeded in destroying two machine-gun nests. Employing an anti-tank grenade launcher he destroyed a third machine-gun position, but was severely wounded by sniper fire. Refusing to move back for aid and ignoring a heavy artillery barrage, this courageous soldier led his men forward, skillfully deploying them man-by-man and directing their fire until he died from his wounds an hour later, killed in action on the battlefield. The conspicuous heroism Sergeant Davis displayed, and his fearless, inspiring leadership and supreme devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 26th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
