    Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces-China/Burma/India, General Orders No. 131 (October 12, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Shields Ambrose Brubeck, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional) (Merrill’s Marauders), in action against enemy forces in North Burma, on 31 July 1944. Captain Brubeck commanded the heavy weapons company of his battalion, and with two other companies was separated from the battalion commander and his staff by an open paddy field under hostile fire. Receiving orders by telephone to coordinate the three companies into a striking force and push the attack at once, Captain Brubeck directed the preparatory fire of his company from a front line position, then directed the attack with great skill and daring. When a section of the line was held up by heavy sniper fire, Captain Brubeck rushed the enemy, firing his sub-machine gun. Inspired by this action the line rushed forward and their combined fire overcame enemy resistance, materially aiding the advance of the battalion. Captain Brubeck’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
