Headquarters, THIRD U.S. Army, General Orders No. 143 (June 17, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Staff Sergeant] Raymond E. Broadbent (ASN: 0-2010349), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 16 February 1945. On that date, while advancing as a scout ahead of his company during action near Koenig, Germany, Lieutenant Broadbent was fired upon by a number of enemy troops occupying dug-in positions. He courageously assaulted one position, killing two enemy soldiers, charge towards an 88-mm. gun, killing one of the crew and wounding the other and then fearlessly advanced through the direct fire on an enemy machine gun emplacement, killed or captured the crew and forced the remainder of the enemy to surrender. Lieutenant Broadbent’s heroic actions enabled his company to advance without a single casualty. His aggressiveness and unswerving devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service.
