The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant James F. Bradley (ASN: 33000821), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 310th Infantry Regiment, 78th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces from 10 to 18 March 1945, near Ohlenburg, Germany. On reaching the outskirts of the town, Sergeant Bradley, a machine gun squad leader, suffered several painful shrapnel wounds. Despite his injuries he exposed himself to heavy enemy fire to set up his gun. He remained with his unit the succeeding several days, leading his squad against powerful opposition. On 18 March 1945, still suffering continually from his wounds, Sergeant Bradley manned a .50 caliber machine gun atop a tank and delivered such a volume of fire that the enemy was forced to withdraw. His courage and ability not only permitted his company to advance to its objective but also contributed materially toward the success of his battalion’s mission. Sergeant Bradley’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 78th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
