The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Radioman Second Class Henry Lloyd Gustafson, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession on the occasion of a fire that occurred in the compass house at the Farallon Islands, California, on 15 August 1930, in which he fought the fire and saved the compass house but lost his life. Radioman Second Class Gustafson was struck and injured by the blast of an explosion at about 12:30 a.m. When discovered at a later hour, he was found to be unconscious from severe burns, the result of which caused his death about six hours later. An empty pyrene fire extinguisher indicated that he fought the fire. His efforts were successful as the fire had been completely extinguished. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
