The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Lester Reymus, United States Army Air Forces, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 77th Pursuit Squadron, at Memorial Airport, Spartanburg, South Carolina, on 6 July 1942. When Second Lieutenant Theodore F. Galloway’s P-39 fighter airplane struck a runway approach at about 100 miles an hour, the plane was demolished. Private Reymus raced the squadron’s crash wagon a half mile to the scene of the crash at the edge of the runway, and with complete disregard for his own personal safety and with flames shooting 50 to 60 feet high, rushed in and brought the mortally injured pilot out. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Private Reymus reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
