The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Four Ronald B. Bailey (ASN: US-56583828), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Four Baily distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 4 February 1968, while serving as a machine gunner with Company B, 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy during a combat mission near Hue, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit became heavily engaged with a large enemy force, Specialist Four Bailey exposed himself to the hostile fire as he moved through an open area to defend a sector of the perimeter that had been weakened. Disregarding his own safety, he then placed effective suppressive fire on the assaulting hostile force. Although wounded at t his time, Specialist Four Baily continued to engage the enemy and provided covering fire for the evacuation of his wounded comrades. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
