The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Frederick R. Bauman, United States Army, for heroism in connection with ground operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Bauman distinguished himself by valorous actions on 31 March 1971, as first platoon leader, Company D, 2nd Battalion (Airborne), 503d Infantry Regiment, 173d Airborne Brigade. During the early morning hours, First Platoon was taken under intense enemy hand grenade and automatic weapons fire. With complete disregard for his personal safety, First Lieutenant Bauman moved form position to position administering first aid to the wounded and reorganizing his platoon for a counter attack. First Lieutenant Bauman rallied his hard-pressed elements and led them in an assault that succeeded in forcing the enemy to withdraw. His courageous actions were instrumental in maintaining the integrity of his platoon throughout the contact. First Lieutenant Bauman’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Military Service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
