First Lieutenant Tahler distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 3 December 1968, while serving as a Platoon Leader with Company C, 4th Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in a reconnaissance in force mission near Binh Thoi. When his platoon was hit by intense enemy fire while crossing an open rice paddy, First Lieutenant Tahler, disregarding his own safety, crawled 50 meters to his front to bring back a new man who froze under the enemy fie. First Lieutenant Tahler then split his platoon and led a two-fronted assault to the east and west, completely disorganizing the enemy and causing them to retreat.
