The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Sergeant Gerry O. J. Danielson, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, on 15 January 1984. On that date, during a severe thunderstorm/snowstorm with winds estimated at 100 knots, a C-141 jumped its chocks, clipped the wing of Sergeant Danielson’s aircraft and continued rolling directly for two other C-141s parked behind it. Despite the driving snow and lightning, Sergeant Danielson quickly left his aircraft and ran after the runaway aircraft. He scrambled aboard, injuring himself in the process, and climbed into the engineer’s seat. He started the auxiliary power unit to supply hydraulic pressure for the brakes and called ground control on the radio to send the crash vehicles. Only after the crash vehicles arrived did he depart the aircraft for a safer area. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Sergeant Danielson reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
