By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Roland W. Cantlin, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery D, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 15 July 1918, in the vicinity of Greves Farm, France, Sergeant Cantlin carried ammunition through the entire length of a heavy shelled woods at night to the guns, then short of shells. Having carried enough to finish the fire in progress, he collected additional men and entirely disregarding personal safety, searched for other piles of ammunition scattered through the woods and led these men to them. The following morning while the shelling was still intense, he carried messages and assisted stretcher bearers to carry the wounded.
