By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry) Walter B. Gains, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the action in Bois d’Aigremont, from 14 to 21 July 1918, Lieutenant Gains was continually exposed to shell fire and disregarding all dangers, kept not only his own troops supplied with rations and ammunition, enabling them to win great success, but also supplied all neighboring troops who requested help. On the night of 26 July, 1918, he brought up supplies to his own attacking troops to within 200 yards of the front line at great peril to himself and the train.
