By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Lester R. Shirley (ASN: 2050480), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Headquarters Company, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Shirley rendered valuable service as a litter bearer during the entire Argonne engagement. During a barrage on 15 October 1918, when the Regimental Post of Command was stationed in a stone quarry on Cunel Road, Private Shirley showed great courage when he voluntarily advanced to the front line and openly exposed himself to the enemy to give first aid to the wounded, and assisted and enlisted others to carry wounded back to the aid station.
