The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant David LaPaul Yates, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-4E Pilot of the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing, Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action in Southeast Asia on 25 April 1970. On that date, Lieutenant Yates led a flight of two F-4E fighter aircraft against a hostile supply/truck park storage area in one of the most highly defended areas of Southeast Asia. Despite adverse weather conditions and accurate, intense hostile ground fire, Lieutenant Yates attacked and destroyed the storage area, causing numerous secondary explosions, and subsequently severely hampering the logistical capability of an opposing force. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Yates reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
