(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel John Christopher Scholtz, Jr., United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Lieutenant Colonel Scholtz distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving the 11th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, 432d Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, SEVENTH Air Force, Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action against the enemy over Southeast Asia on 20 November 1967. Lieutenant Colonel Scholtz flew an unarmed reconnaissance plane over North Vietnam on 24 day and night missions, to photograph troops movements, missile sites, rail and road networks, and waterways. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Scholtz, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
