The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Homer Dewey Tommie, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism while serving with Company M, 27th Infantry, American Expeditionary Forces (Siberia), in action at Posolskaya, Siberia, 10 January 1920. When his platoon was attacked in the night by an armored train, Private Tommie, without thought of his own danger, attempted to board the armored train and was fired upon, wounded, and fell under the wheels of the car, which severed his leg from his body.
