The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Cornelius Joseph Mahoney, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism while serving with Company K, 339th Infantry, 85th Division (Detachment in North Russia), in action near Kadish, Russia, 16 October 1918. After two unsuccessful attempts by patrols to locate the right flank of the enemy, Sergeant Mahoney went out alone behind the enemy lines at great personal risk and selected an excellent position from which to deliver a flank attack. The attack delivered by 60 men from the position selected was highly successful.
