The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Leo Heinzmann, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism while serving with Company A, 31st Infantry, American Expeditionary Forces (Siberia), in action near Romanovka, Siberia, 25 June 1919. When his platoon was completely surrounded by the enemy Corporal Heinzmann volunteered to carry a message through the enemy’s lines to the nearest American troops at Novo-Nezhino, six miles away. Corporal Heinzmann succeeded in getting through the enemy’s lines, reached the nearest American forces, and returning with reinforcement for his platoon.
