The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Roland C. Mack (ASN: 6974304), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa on 1 February 1943. Corporal Mack, fully aware of the danger of such action, deliberately exposed himself to the fire of an enemy machine gun and was killed in an attempt to destroy this menace to the safety of his patrol. His gallant action diverted the machine gunner’s attention and enabled the members of the patrol to silence the weapon. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
