The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain William Michael Hembrough, United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving as a Pilot with the 353d Tactical Fighter Squadron, Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action in Southeast Asia on 18 November 1972. On that date, Captain Hembrough, was second in command of a Search and Rescue force, came under intensely accurate ground fire as he neared the survivors’ location. With weather under less than marginal conditions, Captain Hembrough completely disregarded his own personal safety and made repeated attacks on hostile fire positions that endangered the survivors. When the on-scene commander was hit by ground fire, Captain Hembrough immediately took over command of the rescue operation and directed it to a successful conclusion. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Hembrough has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
