The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Deane Arthur Burbank (AFSN: FR-3195459), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving with the 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron, Pleiku Air Base, South Vietnam, from 28 July 1969 to 29 July 1969. During this time period, First Lieutenant Burbank continuously braved the hazards of hostile fire and extremely adverse weather to aid a friendly long range reconnaissance patrol which had been attacked by a much larger hostile force. His superb aerial skill and personal courage were primarily responsible for the safe extraction of the patrol and saving the lives of two seriously wounded men. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, First Lieutenant Burbank has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
