The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Sergeant Raymond P. Bricker (ASN: RA-19845819), United States Army, for heroism in ground combat against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam during the period 18 March 1968 through 19 March 1968. Sergeant Bricker distinguished himself while serving as a team leader in Company D, 3d Battalion, 187th Infantry, during a combat operation in Tan Uyen, Republic of Vietnam. The lead element of Company D came under intense hostile fire. Unhesitatingly, Sergeant Bricker maneuvered his men forward to give covering fire for the evacuation of wounded personnel. Upon receiving work that his squad leader had been mortally wounded, Sergeant Bricker assumed command of his squad and directed their fire upon the enemy who were attempting to outflank the main body of troops, all the while exposing himself to fierce enemy fire. When the command was given to withdraw, Sergeant Bricker set up a base of fire and conducted an orderly withdrawal of his squad to the main body of the company. With complete disregard for his own life and personal safety, Sergeant Bricker then returned to the scene of the battle and carried several wounded personnel to safety under hostile fire. Sergeant Bricker’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
