The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist James A. Frost, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States in the Republic of Vietnam on 21 April 1970. Specialist Frost distinguished himself while serving as a member of a defoliation detail in Battery C, 4th Battalion (Aerial Artillery), 77th Artillery (Airmobile), at Camp Evans, Republic of Vietnam. One member of the detail was spraying the underbrush around a bunker with aviation fuel when the fuel ignited prematurely, trapping the man in the flames and starting his clothing on fire. Despite the danger, Specialist Frost rushed through the flames and carried the man from the fire. Removing his own fatigue jacket, Specialist Frost smothered the soldier’s flaming uniform and administered first aid until a vehicle arrived to take the victim to a nearby hospital. The actions of Specialist Frost were instrumental in saving the life of his comrade. Specialist Frost’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
