The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to First Lieutenant (Cavalry) Reginald S. Smith (ASN: 0-518729), United States Army, for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States at ***, ***, on 18 December 1944. During an attack from ambush by a numerically superior enemy force, Lieutenant Smith, a platoon leader, reassured and inspired his men by his cool and confident action. Constantly exposing himself to small arms and artillery fire, he ably and effectively led his platoon to gain its objective quickly by driving the enemy from an adjacent woods. When seven of his men were wounded, he exposed himself to intense small arms and artillery fire as he ran across 300 yards of open ground in an effort to secure medical aid. Lieutenant Smith’s courage and diligence were an inspiration to his men and reflect great credit on him and the armed forces of the United States.
