The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Richard J. Diamantopoulos (AFSN: AF-11304670), United States Air Force, for heroism involving risk of life at Patrick Air Force Base, Florida, on 5 July 1965. On that date, Sergeant Diamantopoulos rushed to the area where two teenage boys were far out at sea in an overturned boat. With complete disregard for his own safety, and despite the hazard of heavy surf and treacherous undertow, Sergeant Diamantopoulos unhesitatingly entered the sea, swam out one-half mile on a surfboard, and helped to rescue the two boys. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Sergeant Diamantopoulos has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
