The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Michael Groff, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a squad leader with Company D, 1st Battalion (Airmobile), 5th Cavalry Regiment, during a search and clear mission in Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam, on 6 July 1968. When his unit became engaged with a well concealed enemy ambush force and sustained several casualties, Specialist Fourth Class Groff exposed himself to the intense hostile fire as he crawled across an open area in order to evacuate a mortally wounded comrade to a safe position. Disregarding his own safety, Specialist Fourth Class Groff again moved across the open area and successfully assisted in evacuating another mortally wounded comrade back to friendly lines. During this valiant effort he was overcome with exhaustion and the weakening effect of his painful wounds and was aided in returning to friendly lines. His actions contributed greatly to the successful completion of his unit’s mission. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
