The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Robert E. Fischer, United States Navy, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving as a member of a Navy Underwater Demolition unit, in action in March 1945, as a member of an assault unit participating in the assault landing in the Okinawa Gunto. In the face of enemy rifle, machinegun and mortar fire, he bravely prepared the way for the operations of combat troops, contributing to the success of the mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Naval Service.
