The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” (Posthumously) to Corporal Michael A. McAninch, United States Marine Corps, for heroic achievement in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam while serving as a Squad Leader with Company M, Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division. On 28 August 1969, Company M was crossing a large, open rice paddy during a search and destroy operation when the Marines were pinned down by a heavy volume of fire from a North Vietnamese Army force occupying well-concealed emplacements in a tree line. Realizing the need for immediate action, Corporal McAninch skillfully maneuvered his men into effective defensive positions and, with complete disregard for his own safety, repeatedly exposed himself to the hostile fire as he pointed out targets to his men. During the ensuing fierce engagement, Corporal McAninch observed several wounded Marines lying in a dangerously exposed position and, boldly racing across the fire-swept terrain to a vantage point, was providing covering fire while other Marines evacuated the casualties when he was mortally wounded. His heroic actions and determined efforts inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the lives of several Marines. Corporal McAninch’s courage, aggressive fighting spirit and selfless devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.” [The Combat Distinguishing Device is authorized.]
