(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Corporal Stephen E. Johnson (MCSN: 2349731), United States Marine Corps, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism while serving with the Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in the Republic of Vietnam. On the night of 7 December 1969, Corporal Johnson was at his battalion’s command post in Quang Nam Province when he observed a helicopter crash near the battalion landing zone.; Reacting instantly, he ran to the site of the crash, where he was informed that there was a large amount of ammunition aboard which, because of the fire, was endangering everyone in the area. With complete disregard for his own safety, Lance Corporal Johnson assisted in the removal of casualties to a safe area and administered first aid. Corporal Johnson’s bold and courageous actions in the face of great personal danger were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
