The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Carpenter’s Mate (Armorer) Salvatore H. Impellitteri, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against enemy forces on Peleliu Islands during the period 14 September to 28 September 1944. When personnel trained in bomb and mine disposal were not available, and though having had no previous experience in this highly dangerous occupation, Chief Impellitteri worked tirelessly and skillfully and with complete disregard for his personal safety in the face of enemy mortar and artillery fire in removing large numbers of mines, bombs, booby traps and duds, which were impeding the construction of an airfield to be used by our planes in supporting the accomplishment of the Division. His courage, skill and devotion to duty were material contributions to the accomplishment of that mission and his heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
