Kermit Vandenbos joined the Navy in 1944 after graduating from high school, and returned to civilian live in 1946 to pursue his education. He doctor of medicine degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine in 1953 and was commissioned in the Army Medical Corps, and then transferred to the Air Force in 1954. He retired in 1985 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.
