Jonah Lebell enlisted in the Army Air Forces in 1943 and served as an enlisted member of the Reserve forces until he accepted a direct commission in the U.S. Air Force in 1948, upon assignment to the Air Force Judge Advocate General in Washington, D.C. He retired in 1974 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.
