John Jernigan graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado, Class of 1970. Upon graduation he pursued his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Oklahoma, receiving his degree in 1974 as an Air Force Medical Officer. He retired in 1999 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.
