Larry Welch enlisted in the Kansas National Guard in 1951, before receiving his commission and wings in 1953. He flew combat missions as an F-4C pilot in the Vietnam War. He served from 1984 to 1985 as the 21st Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force, and then served from 1986 to 1990 as the 12th Chief of Staff of the Air Force. He retired in 1990 as a U.S. Air Force 4-Star General.
