James Tipton was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program in in 1938. After serving as a Fighter Pilot in the Army Air Forces in World War II, during which he was credited with destroying two enemy aircraft in aerial combat, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947. He retired in 1968 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.

Tipton (ASN: 0-22554), United States Army Air Forces, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as a Fighter Pilot and Commanding Officer of the 363d Fighter Group and later the 358th Fighter Group, and the destruction of two enemy aircraft, in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. The skillful and zealous manner in which he has sought out the enemy and destroyed him, his devotion to duty and courage under all conditions serve as an inspiration to his fellow flyers. His actions on all these occasions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Force of the United States.
