During World War II, George Della became a U.S. Army Air Forces ACE, credited with shooting down 5 enemy aircraft in aerial combat. He was recalled to active duty in the U.S. Air Force in 1951, serving as a flight instructor in Laredo Texas, and remained on active duty until 1959, when he joined the Air National Guard, flying T-33s until his retirement in 1964 as a U.S. Air Force Major.
