The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Second Gold Star in lieu of a Third Award of the Silver Star to Captain John Crawford Zahm, United States Navy, for gallantry and intrepidity in action as Commander Destroyer Division ONE HUNDRED TWENTY, against the enemy during the preliminary operations, bombardment, assault and support of landings in Lingayen Gulf, Luzon, Philippine Islands, between 3 January and 14 January 1945. All duties assigned to Captain Zahm and ships under his command, which included anti-aircraft and anti-submarine screening, bombardment of enemy shore positions and beaches, and support of minesweeper and underwater demolition units in Lingayen Gulf were executed in an outstanding manner.
