(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit to Captain Herman Adolph Spanagel, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. NASHVILLE in the Pacific Area from 23 November 1943 to 25 April 1944, and as acting commander of a cruiser division. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Captain Spanagel and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
