The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Nathan Schlanger, United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of the Armed Guard aboard the S.S. HILARY A. HERBERT at Anzio, Italy, in January 1944. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Schlanger directed his gun crews during 27 bombing attacks during the seven days it was discharging urgently needed cargo. His gunners drove off the attackers, probably destroying three planes and damaging others. During one of these attacks, when it was necessary to beach the ship, he remained at his battle station directing fire at the attacking aircraft. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
