The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade James Doyle Bare (NSN: 0-173717), United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in the Pacific Area during the period 23 July 1944 to 2 August 1944. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Bare completed twenty flights in a combat area where enemy anti-aircraft fire was expected to be effective or where enemy aircraft patrols usually occurred. His conduct throughout has distinguished him among those performing duties of the same character.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade James Doyle Bare (NSN: 0-173717), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against the enemy in the vicinity of the Northern Philippines on 25 October 1944. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Bare, as pilot of a carrier-based Fighter airplane, was assigned to a night search mission. He assisted his leader in successfully locating fleeing enemy forces, and in utter disregard for his own safety, maintained close visual contact and directed our forces to within gun range, thus enabling our forces to attack and sink an enemy cruiser. He tracked this force at a dangerously low altitude and well within range of enemy anti-aircraft fire, providing valuable information for our surface force until ordered to his base. His heroism, skill and courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
