The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Captain George Henry Bahm (NSN: 0-56854), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States while serving as Commanding Officer of a United States light cruiser in operations against the enemy in the Kyushu area of the Japanese mainland and in support of the landings at Okinawa during the period 22 March to 19 May 1945. On 21 April 1945, his ship participated in the bombardment of Minami causing large fires and effectively destroying enemy installations. His ship was an outstanding component of the task group support unit and a most effective defense instrument against numerous enemy air attacks. His inspiring leadership constantly maintained the fighting efficiency of his ship at a high level, his courage and professional skill were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
