The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Boatswain’s Mate Second Class Donald Gregerson, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action on 15 September 1967, as Boat Captain of an armored troop carrier in the Mekong Delta, Republic of Vietnam. While proceeding in formation with embarked Army troops, the riverine assault units came under fire from both banks of the narrow stream. Petty Officer Gregerson’s troop carrier sustained multiple rocket hits, but he fought his boat past the enemy positions. He then made a high-speed run past the enemy positions to aid another troop carrier which was steering erratically. He boarded the disabled craft and maneuvered it downstream through enemy fire to the evacuation site.
